“OKAY,” SAID JENNY, who’d started jotting down notes in a small spiral notebook. “This will be great.”

“Let’s take the dogs to the train station tomorrow,” said Leo. “You and the director can work out the blocking and stunts. We’ll shoot the train-hopping scene on Saturday. I have a feeling America is going to love our new Duke even more than I do.”

“I guess we’ll find out tonight,” said Jenny. “It’s Thursday. Fred’s first episode streams at eight.”

“And by nine? He’s going to be a star!”

Abby led Fred back to the kennel he shared with a dozen other dogs, including, of course, Cha-Cha.

Abby unclipped Fred’s leash and went over to Cha-Cha.

“Have you heard the news?” she said cheerfully. “You’re going to guest-star in the next episode of Dog Squad.”

“About time,” said Cha-Cha. All Abby heard was a happy yap.

“I’m picking up some very strong happiness signals,” said Abby, putting her fingertips to her temples. “You’ll be great, Cha-Cha. Fred can give you a few pointers. After all, he’s Duke. Now and forever!”

As soon as Abby was gone, Cha-Cha turned to Fred.

“You’re Duke?” she snickered. “You’re not just a part-timer filling in for the real Duke? Impossible.”

Fred was so tired of Cha-Cha needling him. He wondered why some dogs only felt good when they made others feel bad. He decided to gloat a little. Not a lot. Just a little.

“It’s true,” he said. “Now that Duke has reinjured himself, they want me to take over for him. Permanently.”

For the first time since they’d met, Cha-Cha was speechless. She stood there with her mouth open and her purple tongue dangling out.

“Now, if you will excuse me,” said Fred, “I need to go take a nap. My first episode streams tonight and we’re having a party at Jenny’s place to celebrate.”
